Higginson was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on December 22, 1823. He was a descendant of Francis Higginson, a Puritan minister and immigrant to the colony of Massachusetts Bay. William Henry Channing, Unitarian minister and reformer, was born in Boston, Mass.
